Kaiju No. 8 will end with a theatrical movie instead of a Season 3 — and the announcement finally settles the question fans have been asking since last December.

The film, titled Kaiju No. 8: The Final Mission, was announced on October 24, 2026, at the Defense Force Boot Camp event in Tachikawa, Japan. It will open in Japanese theaters in 2027, with no US release date announced yet. The concluding story was first teased at Jump Festa in December 2025, but its format was never confirmed until now — a movie, not another television season.

Production I.G returns to animate the film, with Shigeyuki Miya returning to direct, and Studio Khara back in charge of the kaiju designs. The announcement also revealed a new super teaser visual, drawn by art director Shinji Kimura, showing a mysterious, enormous kaiju looming over a devastated landscape under the tagline: “The age of humanity comes to an end.”

That image points straight at the threat waiting in the finale. Kaiju No. 9, who absorbed Isao Shinomiya before flying away declaring that the age of kaiju had begun, sets its ultimate scheme in motion — and Kafka Hibino resolves to fight it as Kaiju No. 8, one last time.

Kafka’s voice actor, Masaya Fukunishi, marked the moment in a comment shared at the event: “After the broadcasts of Seasons 1 and 2, we’ve been able to enjoy the Kaiju No. 8 anime together with everyone. And now, in 2027, this series will finally reach its conclusion with a theatrical film!”

It is a fittingly big ending for a series that grew into one of the decade’s breakout action anime — and a movie treatment means the final battle gets the scale, and the budget, a TV finale could not. The only question left is the one fans are already debating.

Movie or final season — which ending did you want?
